HELP THY NEIGHBOUR
Connecting those who need help with those who can help.
On Toronto's East Side, we're working to connect vulnerable members of our community with volunteers who can help with external tasks during the COVID-19 pandemic.
ABOUT EAST FOR EAST
Arising from a Nextdoor post in the Leslieville community, East for East is a grassroots community effort to connect the most vulnerable members of our East Toronto community with those who can help as we face the COVID-19 pandemic.
Picking up groceries or medication, collecting the mail, even walking the dog, we're here to help East Toronto be here for East Toronto in a time of need.
Answering the Questions We Can
Please remember to follow ALL safety instructions from your local and national authorities. Only offer help where it is allowed in your area and if you're confident it's safe to do so.
Currently, according to Volunteer Toronto and the Ontario Ministry of Health the community health risk for volunteers and volunteer programs is low for those who are not invulnerable demographics (elderly individuals or with underlying health risks).
We encourage all who volunteer to ensure they are within a low-risk category and further, only volunteer on grounds in which they feel comfortable from a medical and social perspective.
All volunteers are responsible for their personal health and precautionary/protective actions while volunteering, and should adhere to best practices put forward by WHO, the Ontario Ministry of Health and the Government of Canada.
East For East does not gather detailed address information at the point of initial application, with those needing help able to provide their contact information directly to a matched volunteer or to the administrative team upon matching.
Access to any database information for volunteers and those in need is limited to the small East for East administrative team (currently 3 people) as the team works to adhere to industry best practices wherever possible.
Wash hands before and after any activities in addition to using sanitizer options during the process.
Leave items on the doorstep and do not enter people's homes. Avoid all contact with anyone who might be sick and with as many people as possible.
Use trusted and contactless payment services like eTransfer, Venmo or Paypal instead of cash and always bring back a receipt for purchases.
As a volunteer group who carry out the work of connecting parties within our community, East for East rely on their own volunteers to retain personal liability and exercise their best judgment at all times in respect of both their personal health and the necessary precautions in these circumstances.
East for East makes no recommendations as to best practices in this situation and encourages all volunteers to visit WHO and Canadian government resources to determine their best plan where needed.
Starting from an idea and post on Nextdoor by Nectaria Kladitis, a small group of East Toronto locals have banded together via the internet to try and create something good out of a tough time for our neighbourhood and home.
Put together by Nectaria Kladitis, a local real estate agent, Victor Garbutt, a local business owner and Sasky Stewart, a local (via Australia) digital communications specialist, East for East is about grassroots and community and everything that makes our home great. Come help!
